Venereal Warts (Condylomata Acuminata)

Venereal warts are the most common STI in the world. One Half of all sexually active young adults in United States have been infected. Venereal warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). High-risk types of HPV are 16, 18, 31, and 33.
 
Skin Manifestations
 
Venereal warts, are multiple, painless, cauliflower-shaped, soft,  papules located in moist anogenital regions (. In females, they are typically found on the vulva, cervix, perineum, or anus.
In males, they are usually on the penis or perianal area. 
 
 
 
Course
 
The incubation period can vary from several weeks to over a year.
High-risk HPV are a risk for cervical cancer and may also increase the risk of developing cancers of the vulva, vagina, glans penis, and anus
 
Contagiousness
 
HPV spreads via direct skin-to-skin contact and fomites. 
For Men the risk factors are 
1. Early age for Sexual Intercourse
2. Have sex with multiple sexual partners.
3. Having sex with prostitutes. or are 
4. Not circumcised.
 
Diagnosis
 
Diagnosed clinically. 
Biopsy for warts if cancer is suspected. 
PCR Testing.
 
Treatment

1. Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy -The warts and 2 mm of surrounding skin are frozen white once or twice with a liquid nitrogen dispenser or cotton swab.
2. Electrocautery are slightly more effective than cryotherapy and work well for large warts. 
3. Trichloroacetic acid and
4.Podophyllin.
5. Podophyllotoxin 0.5% solution applied to the warts at home twice daily for 3 consecutive days per week for 1 to 4 weeks.
